Team Canada an Inspiration at PyeongChang 2018 Paralympics
Return to Blog

Team Canada has been giving an outstanding performance at the Games these last three days. We should be proud to have them representing us on the world stage. The PyeongChang 2018 games will go from March 9-18 and will see over 600 athletes competing in 80 events.

Canada is a powerhouse winter sports competitor and the expectations are high for our athletes to place strongly in wheelchair curling, Para alpine skiing, Para ice hockey (sledge hockey), Para snowboard and Para Nordic skiing. CBC, Sportsnet and online coverage improves for the Paralympics each year they are held as our biases are overcome and we appreciate the high level of athleticism that are on display.

So far, our Para curling and Paralympic hockey teams have won their games. The alpine skiing has been exciting, and the medals are rolling in there.

Becoming a Paralympic athlete is difficult. There are one-day athlete identification events that test participant aptitudes and abilities. These represent the first step in the process. Since competitive sports at the amateur level are much more limited that for able bodied individuals there need to be special events established.

If you or someone you love is athletic and has a physical disability you can encourage them to try out by participating in the PARALYMPIAN SEARCH. Here is some information on the upcoming events:

Following participation in PARALYMPIAN SEARCH, participants may be selected for a local club, provincial or national development program designed to propel athletes from their developmental stages to a Paralympic podium. Additionally, all participants will receive information on how to get started in the sports of their choice.
