Kitchener Man Charged: OPP Vehicle Stop Leads To Cocaine And Meth Trafficking Charges

(Township Of Wellington North, On) - On March 22, 2020 at approximately 2:05 p.m. the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated the occupants of a motor vehicle on Highway 6 in the Township of Wellington North.

While speaking with the driver, the officer observed a clear baggy containing a white powdery substance, hanging partially out of the front pouch pocket of the passenger's hooded sweatshirt. The officer repeatedly asked the person to identify themselves however they refused, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee. 

A foot pursuit ensued through a swamp while the suspect attempted to dispose of the drugs. After a brief struggle and with the assistance of the West Grey Police Service, the suspect was taken into custody.

Police conducted a search incident to arrest and seized a substantial amount of Canadian currency was seized as well as a large quantity of crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and baggies which in totality are consistent with possession for the purpose of trafficking drugs.

James Thorold COURTNEY, 41-years-old of Kitchener has been charged with:

·      Possession of Methamphetamine for the Purpose of Trafficking

·      Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking

·      Assault With Intent to Resist Arrest

·      Obstruct Peace Officer

·      Fail To Comply With Probation Order

The accused was held for a bail hearing.
