Make Sure You Have Health Insurance Before You Travel

Many Canadians don't think twice before heading to America for a quick shopping trip, concert or sporting event. Not many think to buy health insurance before they go. In fact, an alarming 44% of people aged 18-34 rarely or never purchase insurance according to a recent RBC survey.

American health care is a pay as you go system and without insurance medical bills can easily run in the hundreds of thousands if you have a medical crisis or car accident. According to OHIP, they will pay for a portion of our of province health care, up to $400 / day in hospital costs. OHIP only covers emergency expenditures in the US.  American medical practices are also very different from ours with doctors there often ordering expensive tests that would not routinely be called for here.

You may also wish to check with your car insurer before heading to the US to make certain you have enough coverage to protect yourself in the event you are hit by an uninsured motorist, or in a hit and run.

Travelling to the US can be fun, but in the event of an accident you shouldn't have to worry about how the bills will be paid.
