If you have a serious continuous or prolonged mental or physical impairment you may be eligible to claim the federal Disability Tax Credit. The impairment must leave you significantly restricted in two or more basic activities of daily living, or significantly restricted in vision, and must existed at least 90% of the time in your daily life. There is a lengthy application form that must be completed by a qualified healthcare professional.
The non-refundable tax credit helps to reduce the amount of income tax that an individual pays, and helps to offset the costs of dealing with the impairment. There is a supplement for minors, and the tax credit can be transferred to a spouse or other supporting person. If the impairment has existed for a considerable length of time you can apply for a reassessment of your taxes for up to 10 years. Many conditions may make you or your child eligible for the credit such as Type 1 or 2 diabetes, epilepsy, learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), bi-polar disorder, manic depression, anxiety disorders, autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome.
If you feel you may be eligible to claim the expense you can speak to Revenue Canada or to your family physician.
