RCMP across Canada push national campaign to stop impaired drivers.

The RCMP are ramping up a new education campaign aimed at stopping impaired drivers. The RCMP is responsible for policing in Atlantic Canada, much of the north of Canada.

This campaign focusses on further training officers on breath alcohol analysis, and on the detection of other signs of impairment. Impaired driving is a huge problem and a leading cause of death and personal injury on roads. Remote areas of Canada have a higher tolerance for drinking and driving than in more developed areas of the country. The RCMP hopes to get the message out that drinking and driving is not acceptable.

Even the language around impaired driving is being reviewed by the RCMP. For example they are being instructed to call breathalyzers 'instruments' rather than 'machines' in order to enhance the credibility of the officers and testing in courts.
