The Reliablity of Tranexamic Acid Being Tested in TBI Treatment

Tranexamic Acid (TXA) is a drug often used during surgical procedures to prevent excessive blood loss. There is a line of research underway now to determine whether administering TXA immediately following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to improved mental recovery.
Leading trauma centers in America are conducting trials with patients beginning in the field with paramedics, and continuing through to the emergency room visit. Three groups of patient results will be evaluated (control, placebo and experimental).
There is a great deal of hope that TXA could be used in TBI patients much like aspirin in stroke victims, with hopes that with the ability to give the medication immediately following brain injury the damage can be minimized or reduced.
