Pedestrian Safety Should Be at Forefront of Drivers' Concerns

Linkedin

There have been several incidents in the Region of Waterloo in the past month which highlight how careless many drivers are being. We have seen young children struck at intersections twice in the last week alone. This points to some serious problems with the culture of driving.

It is a well-known fact that distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents in Ontario. The number of people who are eating, drinking, texting and talking on the phone while behind the wheel is astounding. All you need to do is to sit at an intersection for a few moments to see how many people are doing one of those other activities while driving. A second cause of accidents is driving too fast, and thus not having time to react appropriately when people 'suddenly' appear in intersections.

Drivers must be vigilant when behind the wheel of their cars. They must anticipate that in urban areas there will be people in or approaching crosswalks and trying to cross the road. Regardless of who is at fault in an accident it will always be the pedestrian who is injured.

Please slow down, and please pay attention to the road.
