Mixed News from Holiday RIDE stops

Now that the holidays are officially over the police have tabulated the results of the RIDE programmes run in and around the Region. The news is good and bad.

Waterloo Regional Police stopped nearly 12,000 drivers from November 28 -J anuary 4 at 22 locations. They conducted 53 roadside breathalyser tests and of those there were only 3 impaired drivers, 5 three day suspensions issued, and one charge laid for refusing to provide a sample. There was less good news from the OPP who released a statement indicating that they were disappointed with their holiday RIDE campaign.

On the provincial highways there was an increase in the number of impaired driving charges laid this year. The OPP laid 593 charges for impaired driving and issued 485 warning range suspensions. They ran more than 8000 RIDE checkpoints province wide and did not release the total number of people stopped.

The OPP and Regional Police both remind us that driving sober should be the expectation. If you see someone driving or about to drive after drinking or consuming drugs then you should call 911 and report them immediately. You may save a life.
