Riding ATVs is dangerous for children

ATVs can be a lot of fun to ride and drive, but you must remember that they are powerful machines that carry a high risk of injury or death for people riding them incorrectly. Sadly, Ontario has seen another death of an ATV rider.

A young girl wearing her helmet was riding her ATV on a trail in cottage country on an ATV/snowmobile trail when she came upon a pedestrian. While passing the person she did a shoulder check and lost control of the vehicle which rolled on her and killed her. She had a helmet on at the time.

Police are investigating whether the trail was on public or private land as this will determine whether the Highway Traffic Act is in effect. Anyone riding an ATV on a public roadway must be 16, and must be a licenced driver. On HTA trails drivers must be at least 12.
