The kind of car you drive predicts your risk of an accident and your auto insurance rates

Linkedin

Did you know that what you drive predicts your car insurance rate and to some extent how likely you are to have an accident?

Auto Insurers set your premium using many different factors. They assess your driving experience, how many accidents you’ve had, your age, gender, where you live, how much you drive and importantly what you drive.

Insurers can look at the data and predict what cars are most likely to be in accidents. Mid sized and luxury cars are the most collision prone apparently. These include cars like the Acura TLX, Lexus GS 350 and Hyundai Sonata. It seems that vehicles not built for speed, minivans, vans and SUVs are on the other end of the accident spectrum.

The most accident prone cars in order are:

  1. Hyundai Sonata
  2. Infinity Q50
  3. Lexus GS350

Others in the top ten include the Maxda 3 Sport and Acura TLX.

The Least Accident prone include:

  1. Ford Explorer
  2. Dodge Caravan
  3. And surprisingly Chevrolet Corvette
  4. Tesla Model 3

It appears that although he Corvette is a sports car people driving them do so safely.

If you are shopping for car insurance it is worth calling several companies. To ensure you are a good risk for insurance have a clean driving record. Remember to always ask for the additional coverages that you can purchase to protect yourself and family in the event of an accident. The basic coverages for catastrophic benefits will not be enough to care for you should you need around the clock care. Extended benefits cost very little compared to the overall price of insurance.

Many people aren’t aware of the limited coverage that insurance offers in the case of personal injury in an accident. You can read about it in my annual auto insurance survey, and find out what questions you should be asking your agent or broker when you buy or renew policies.
