It was National Teen Safety Driver Week Last Week

Unfortunately, we missed that in the shuffle of news. On the upside, it is never too late to review all driver safety, especially that of novice teen drivers.

Parachute is Canada’s national charity dedicated to injury prevention. In an attempt to highlight the dangers teen drivers face, they Made Oct 16-22, 2022 National Teen Driver Safety Week – Distracted driving.

In Ontario road crashes are a leading cause of death and the third leading cause of death in young people aged 15-24. Young people are killed at a higher rate than any other age group under 75 according to Parachute.

Here are the facts on teen driver safety:

  • In half of the deaths of teen drivers’ alcohol is a contributing factor
  • In almost 65% of teen driver fatalities, the teen who died had been drinking
  • Summer is the most dangerous season
  • Teen drivers are more likely to be involved in single-vehicle crashes
  • Males account for most teens who are injured or die drinking and driving
  • Texting while driving/distracted driving increases your crash risk 6x
  • Your risk of crashing increases anytime you take your eyes off the road
  • Speeding is a factor in 30% of teen driver deaths
  • Teens are more likely to speed with other teens in the car
  • Speed kills – the faster the car the more likely pedestrians or passengers are to be killed
  • Driving high is as dangerous as driving drunk
  • 20% of teens say they have driven within 4 hours of using cannabis – talk to your kids about this
  • 35% of teens have been a passenger with a driver who consumed cannabis in the last 4 hours

Graduated licencing has had an impact in lowering teen fatalities. Teens also follow the models of the adults they grow up with – make sure you model good driving behaviour by not using your phone while driving, keeping two hands on the wheel, not speeding, not driving impaired and driving to the conditions.
