Ice Dogs Take Double Beating From Rangers

A home-and-home weekend saw the Kitchener Rangers close the preseason with a pair of wins over the Niagara IceDogs. A 4-3 shootout win on Friday in Kitchener, followed by a 6-3 win in Beamsville Saturday night.

Saturday's Game

Rickard Hugg gave the Rangers a 1-0 advantage at the 4:20 mark of the first, with his second goal of the preseason. Assisting on the goal were Justin MacPherson and Donovan Sebrango. The IceDogs were kept off the board in the first 20-minutes.

The second period saw five goals. IceDogs Jake Uberti evened the score 1-1 at 4:19, and at 7:21, a shot from the point by Oliver Castleman put Niagara up 2-1. Three Kitchener goals followed to double the Rangers advantage 4-2. Eric Guest, Carter Tresoor and Justin MacPherson each netted one for Kitchener.

The third started off with a goal by Greg Meireles at 6:24 to put the Rangers ahead 5-2. Just over two-minutes later, Philip Tomasino replied making it 5-3. And closing scoring in the game was Michael Vukojevic to end things 6-3 for Kitchener.

Joseph Garreffa, Kyle Gentles and Rickard Hugg each wore an “A” and skated as alternates to Greg Meireles with the “C”.

Hockey returns home to Kitchener on Friday, September 21 for the regular season Home Opener versus the Flint Firebirds. Puck drop is 7:30pm. Great seats still available!

Friday's Game

Greg Meireles Leads Rangers to 4-3 win

The Kitchener Rangers claimed a 4-3 preseason shootout win over the Niagara IceDogs at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex.

The IceDogs took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission with a power play marker by Oliver Castleman and a goal by Ian Martin.

Early in the second, Kitchener’s Greg Meireles closed the gap as he scored his third of the preseason on the power play making it 2-1.

The Rangers continued to battle back and tied the game, as Isaac Langdon and Arber Xhekaj made it 3-3, where the score remained through to the end of the third forcing a shoot-out.

Niagara was held off the board in the shootout with Joseph Garreffa and Greg Meireles scoring to give Kitchener the victory.

Luke Richardson picked up the win, making 26 saves on 29 Niagara shots.

Final shots on goal favoured Kitchener, 32-29. Constantinou (NIA) (3), Langdon (KIT) (2), and Meireles (KIT) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.

Joseph Garreffa, Connor Hall and Eric Guest each wore an “A” and skated as alternates to Greg Meireles with the “C”.

The Rangers travel to Beamsville tomorrow (Saturday, September 15) to once again face the IceDogs. Game time is 7:00pm.
