Flexible transit coming to Breslau

'Flexible transit umbrella of services will help determine demand and ridership in Breslau.'

Waterloo Region – Beginning, July 11, Grand River Transit (GRT) will launch a new flexible transit option to serve the community of Breslau.

In partnership with Metrolinx, the on-demand pilot project will connect residents to key destinations, including schools, employment centres, the Region of Waterloo International Airport, and the Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre, as well as the GRT network with connections to GO Transit. Route 79 Breslau will be free for customers to try for the summer, until Sept. 2.

“This pilot project expands on GRT’s existing flexible transit umbrella of services and will help determine demand and ridership in Breslau as it continues to develop,” said Neil Malcolm, Acting Director, Transit Services. “For the first time, we’ll have a transit option for residents travelling to and from our growing airport.”

The service can be booked using the GRT Flex app available for iOS and Android devices. The route has no fixed route or schedule and will serve flexible transit stops based on the most efficient route for customers onboard and planned pick-up and drop-offs. Customers can connect to Route 79 Breslau from the existing GRT network at Victoria Street North and Lackner Boulevard. Throughout the summer, additional features will be rolled out to improve the experience.

GRT’s flexible transit routes provide service for areas that are difficult to serve with regular, fixed bus routes. Route 79 Breslau joins other flexible transit options, including Route 72 Boxwood and Route 77 Wilmot.

“Metrolinx is focused on the future of transit and excited to collaborate with municipal partners to find innovative ways to move people efficiently throughout the region. We’re committed to exploring new opportunities to promote public transit as a first choice,” said Phil Verster, President and CEO, Metrolinx.
